I knew it was going to be one of those days. A day in need of extraordinary mom strength. A day that no matter how much pain I see on my daughter’s face, no matter how bruised and tattered her leg, I will have to keep my emotions controlled and exhibit the appropriate facial expressions of positive reassurance. I cannot gasp or cry, but then I can’t pretend there is nothing wrong and that she isn’t in extreme pain. That balance is going to be really, really, difficult.
Yes, this day I will have to dig deep into the reserves of mom strength and personal resolve alone is not going to be enough. First thing, dress with confidence, cute flats to be secure on my feet to help her with the crutches, pretty pink sweater with complimentary scarf to add color to my cheeks (just in case I go pale at the sight of the stitches) and a couple of shiny bracelets. Yes, this is the outfit. I look good, understated but perky, very Mom, but it isn’t doing anything for my confidence. It’s probably the “perky” that’s not working, I need more help, something deep and personal, I need a Black Bra.
So, I scrapped the pink sweater for a black cashmere turtleneck, grabbed my old worn black leather jacket and set off to Starbucks for a triple nonfat Cappuccino. And armed with the security of my Black Soma Vanishing 360 Perfect Coverage Lace Trim Bra I was prepared with serious, unwavering Mom Strength.
Inspiration:
I was getting dressed to take my adult daughter to another doctor appointment, I was tired and saddened for my daughter who had suffered a serious injury after a fall from a ladder and I was looking for strength to get through the day. Suddenly I knew what I needed. Creating this collage project was a way for me share this important epiphany of my need for extra strength.
What I used:
Laura Heine Collage Pattern “Pretty in Pink”
https://www.fiberworks-heine.com/
Thank you, Ms. Heine, for understanding my choice of black and providing such beautiful patterns for those of us who are not artists.
I did not include a tutorial or demonstration in this post, I recommend taking a collage class at your local quilt shop and there are many excellent tutorials on YouTube.
Choosing the fabric…
My first choices of colorful flower fabrics and collage background was wrong. It needed more character and strength to be true to my story. Even though perky is the desired result of a well fitted bra this design needed less “perky”. The more I tried colorful accents, I realized this is a very personal project and should reflect me, more serious and less flash. When I pulled a fabric I have been saving for that “perfect” project since 2006 I knew what to do.
· Bra background fabric is black cotton sateen.
· Black Roses highlights from my stash – Timeless Treasures 2006.
· Lace accents: Moda Fabrics “Boudoir” by BasicGrey.
· Butterflies: Timeless Treasures “Butterfly” C7975.
· Background: Riley Blake “Abbie” Coral Abbie Stripe. Pink was important in the story and an easy choice for the background.
· Quotes created on printable fabric sheets.
· Finished project mounted on 24 X 24 blank artist canvas, check your local art supply store or DickBlick.com.
· See the Laura Heine pattern for instructions and additional supplies for collage projects.
Notes
· The “Pretty in Pink” pattern was designed as a Breast Cancer awareness pattern. I would encourage all women to get a mammogram per the advice of their physician. Donations to Breast Cancer Research can be made at www.komen.org or at your local women’s health clinic.
· Take a collage class at your local quilt store. I learned a lot from the class I took from Gail at Modern Quilting in Phoenix.
· Karen Kay Buckley scissors are excellent for cutting intricate fabric pieces for collage, raw edge applique and fine fabrics.
Excerpts from the Prayer “Hail Mary”
Hail Mary

Ave Maria, performed by
Luciano Pavarotti

A mom is the glue that holds everything together, even when she feels she may fall apart. That says it all about the role of a Mom.
Guardian Angel
Excerpts from a prayer to a Guardian Angel; Ever this day be at my side…
I most definitely have a Guardian Angel and I'm sure this is what she looks like – Great wings and a sword!
And isn’t Guardian Angel the duty of every mother.
Put on your costume
From the Opera Pagliacci
In the finale of the first act Canio, believes his wife is having an affair and he is heartbroken. The aria proclaims that at times, no matter the circumstance, one must take on their responsibilities and perform.
This is the most beautiful and heartbreaking performance of his career. My grandfather's name was also Luciano, a Sicilian immigrant with a similar build to Mr. Pavarotti and when he brings his hands to his face I recall my Papa's hands. I cry every time I watch this.

Translation in English
I declaim! While taken with delirium,
I do not know what I am saying,
or what I am doing!
Yet it is necessary, I must force myself!
Bah! Are you not a man?
Thou art Pagliacci (clown)!
Put on your costume and apply make up to your face.
The people pay, and they want to laugh.
And if Harlequin invites away Colombina
laugh, Pagliaccio (clown), and everyone will applaud!
Turn the spasms and tears into jokes,
The tears and pain into grimaces, Ah!
Laugh, Pagliaccio (clown),
your love is broken!
Laugh of the pain, that poisons your heart!
